Having their ultimate origin in the ancestral sin, amplified by personal sins, the sorrows, the suffering and diseases are signs of God's love and mercy, evidences of His all-knowing-wisdom. The borderline situations, the dramatic circumstances of life, the trials and pains are not signs of abandonment or forgetfulness of God, but is a difficult test to be passed through soul’s dignity and nobility, faith, patience and prayer, in hope of eternal reward from God. The transient sufferings and afflictions are signs of divine election, experienced by the Christian believer on his way to the future and eternal joys. The task of undertaking and bearing them is considered in the Orthodox faith the highest charisma, the most important gift that man can attain for his future, for the immortal and happy life.
