The Theological dimension of illness and pastoral care of the sick
Life and health, as gifts received from God, must be valued through a theonomic freedom of man and not autonomous, which leads to the wrong target (sin), by moving away from His Supreme, Absolute and Hypostatic center, to the pathological attachment to addictions and passionate vices, leading to disease and suffering. Difficult as it may be, suffering and sickness reflect the presence and work of God in mans life. Suffering can be a pedagogical tool that God as the source of life uses for the good of man. Bodily illness becomes, through divine providence, an antidote for the soul and an opportunity for spiritual progress. Thus, sickness and suffering must be overcome and transfigured into Christ through the Holy Spirit. The mission of the Church is to contribute to the spiritual and moral healing of society. The assumption of suffering and the cross through faith, humility, patience, repentance must lead to the christification of man, which constitutes the goal of the work of the Persons of the Holy Trinity in him.
