Death, and more broadly finitude and mortality, has been a perennial religious preoccupation, a universal yet anxious attribute of the human condition that has necessitated a salvific response. According to the transhumanist view, the salutary response to this dire situation is to wage a medical and technological war against aging and death. In the present study, the considerable extension of life advocated by transhumanists, the anti-aging interventions proposed by a controversial branch of the life sciences called biomedical gerontology, and the transhumanist effort to eliminate death from the horizon of human consciousness are analyzed. Finally, we show that death acquires its full meaning only in the Christian understanding.
