The present essay examines the personal experience and the major currents in the Christian attitude towards medicine that constituted the lived and the conceptual context in which the great bishop and theologian Basil of Caesarea formulated his attitude towards illness, healing and the Christian use of medicine, with special reference to his position expressed in the Longer Rule 55 of his Asketikon.
